HOW TO GET INVOLVED
A Guide to Federal Fishery Management Agencies
Regulations affecting fishing activities and the conservation of
fish populations in federal waters of the ocean - from 3-200 miles
offshore - are the joint responsibility of the eight Regional Fishery
Management Councils and NOAA Fisheries (formerly the National Marine
Fisheries Service or NMFS). In most cases, regulations are prepared
by the councils and then reviewed and approved (or disapproved)
by NOAA Fisheries. The exception is highly migratory species - tuna,
swordfish, billfish and sharks - in the Atlantic, for which NOAA
Fisheries is the sole US authority.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Contact your regional council and the NOAA Fisheries office
in your area and ask to be placed on mailing lists for species
you are concerned about.
- Keep them apprised of information or events which could impact
fishing or the health of fish populations where you live or fish,
and let them know you you feel about the issues and positions
discussed on the NCMC's web site.
- Contact your representatives in Congress. Your elected officials
need to know that fisheries conservation is important to their
constituents. Let them know about fisheries issues you are concerned
about.
