SETH BROWN
1927-2011
11/16/11 Ocean conservationist
F. Seth Brown of Borrego Springs, California, died on October 22nd.
He was 84.
Seth helped organize the National Coalition for Marine Conservation
- Pacific Region in 1986, bringing together sport and commercial
fishermen to protect the future of fishing on the west coast. He
came to ocean activism via his love for fishing, following a conservation
ethic that led him to release everything that wasnt destined
for the table, his friends say.
During his tenure with the Pacific Region of NCMC, the organization
initiated a white sea bass enhancement project with Hubbs-Sea World,
fought to eliminate gill nets off the coast of California, and led
an effort to change management of anchovy and other prey species
to increase their abundance. NCMCs pacific affiliate merged
with United Anglers of Southern California in 1993.
Seth Brown leaves a legacy of ocean activism that lives
today, says NCMC president Ken Hinman. His contributions
to preserving the California fishing tradition are remembered and
appreciated.
In 1994, the San Diego Oceans Foundation honored Seth for making
a significant contribution to humans ability to coexist
with the marine environment. For more information on Seth
